UIDAI is considering a redesigned Aadhaar card that will display only the holder’s photo and a secure QR code. Personal details will be hidden to stop misuse, with new rules expected by December 2025.
New Delhi | 21 November 2025: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is preparing to redesign the Aadhaar card to make it safer and harder to misuse. The updated version may include only the cardholder’s photograph and a secure QR code, removing visible personal details such as the Aadhaar number, name, address, date of birth and other sensitive information.
UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar, speaking at an online conference, said that the change aims to stop misuse of Aadhaar photocopies and prevent unauthorized access to personal data. He noted that under the new system, even if someone views the Aadhaar card or submits its photocopy to any office, hotel, telecom retailer or event organiser, they will not be able to see or store the user’s details.
According to UIDAI, hotels, SIM vendors and organisers of conferences or seminars often collect photocopies for verification. However, these copies can sometimes be misused, putting citizens at risk. The redesigned card and revised rules will ensure that no personal information is exposed during such routine checks.
The authority plans to implement these new guidelines by December 2025, marking one of the biggest security upgrades to the Aadhaar ecosystem since its launch. Officials believe the change will strengthen privacy protection and help citizens use Aadhaar confidently without the fear of data theft.
