Outgoing Chief Justice B. R. Gavai broke protocol and caste stereotypes by leaving his official Mercedes for newly sworn-in CJI Surya Kant, underlining humility, respect, and continuity in India’s judiciary.

New Delhi|  25 November 2025:  Former Chief Justice of India B. R. Gavai created a significant moment of symbolism and respect on Monday, when he handed over his official Mercedes-Benz car to his successor, Justice Surya Kant, during the swearing-in ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Gavai, who retired on 23 November, had arrived at the presidential palace in the official car but chose to leave in his personal vehicle  intentionally leaving the CJI’s car available for Surya Kant’s first official drive. According to an official source, this gesture ensures that the successor has the full dignity and convenience of the Supreme Court vehicle for his early days in office.

Observers have described this as a rare act of humility and institutional grace, underlining the non-political ethos expected of India’s top judiciary. It also stands out given Gavai’s identity: he is one of the few Dalit judges to serve as Chief Justice, making his respectful handover especially symbolic in the context of representation and legacy.

Justice Surya Kant took the oath as India’s 53rd Chief Justice, administered by President Droupadi Murmu in a brief ceremony. His tenure is expected to last almost 15 months, until he turns 65 in February 2027.

Gavai’s action has been lauded across media outlets for setting a “new tradition” not just for decorum but for mentoring and respect in the judiciary.
