Pune Traffic Police penalise over 1,000 illegal auto-rickshaws in two-week crackdown to ease city congestion
Pune Traffic Police penalised 1,087 illegal or violating auto-rickshaws between 10–26 November across multiple city zones, targeting offences like overloading, no-uniforms, wrong-side driving, and fare refusal.
Pune, 28 November 2025: Between 10 and 26 November 2025, Pune City Traffic Police carried out an intensive crackdown on illegal auto-rickshaw operations and traffic violations, penalising a total of 1,087 rickshaws. The enforcement drive was led by a special team comprising one officer and four personnel, focusing on auto-related offences across areas including Aundh, Camp, Deccan, Khadki, Kondhwa, Swargate, and PCMC zones.
Among the violations recorded, 424 cases involved electric auto drivers not wearing the prescribed uniform, while 234 rickshaws were booked for carrying passengers beyond permitted capacity. Authorities also penalised 138 drivers for refusing fares. Other offences included unauthorized parking or obstructing traffic (92), parking at unauthorized rickshaw stands (38), wrong-side driving (36), front-seat violations (36), failure to carry mandatory documents (16), signal-jumping (16), and miscellaneous traffic violations (57).
The city police said the crackdown aims to reduce congestion, ensure passenger safety, and enforce compliance with transport rules. Officials cautioned that continued enforcement may include further fines, permit suspensions, or even vehicle impoundments in repeat offences. They urged auto-rickshaw drivers to follow traffic norms strictly, stick to designated stands, carry valid documents, and charge fair metered fares.
Commuters welcomed the drive as a step toward safer, more orderly urban mobility — but some also called for adding more authorised auto stands and better regulation to ensure convenience without compromising safety.
The crackdown reflects growing efforts by Pune’s traffic authorities to clean up public transport operations and address long-standing issues related to illegal auto-rickshaw activity and poor traffic discipline across the city.
