Pune PMC Plans ₹1,438-Crore Sewage Project for Seven Newly Merged Villages

PMC has proposed a ₹1,438-crore sewage project for seven merged villages, including new STPs and 378 km of sewer lines to improve sewage treatment.

Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has prepared a revised ₹1,438-crore sewage infrastructure proposal aimed at expanding drainage and sewage-treatment facilities in seven villages that were recently brought under the civic body’s jurisdiction.

The project covers Wagholi, Manjari, Handewadi-Autadewadi, Shewalewadi, Bavdhan, Wadachiwadi and Holkarwadi. Under the proposal, PMC plans to develop sewer networks and establish seven new sewage treatment plants (STPs) across these areas.

The proposed infrastructure includes approximately 378 km of sewer lines and 46 km of main pipelines. Among the planned treatment facilities are an 111 MLD STP at Vadgaon Sheri and a 166 MLD STP in the Manjari area, according to reports on the revised plan.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to address Pune’s growing sewage-management requirements and reduce untreated wastewater entering the Mula-Mutha river system.

At present, Pune generates around 980 MLD of sewage every day, while available treatment capacity is approximately 477 MLD. This leaves about 503 MLD of sewage without treatment, highlighting the infrastructure gap that the proposed projects are intended to address.

The proposal was revised after concerns were raised about the need for a coordinated sewage-management strategy across the wider Pune metropolitan area. Officials from Pimpri-Chinchwad reportedly pointed out that implementing sewage projects only within PMC limits could limit the overall impact if untreated sewage from adjoining areas continues to flow into the river system.

Following these concerns, authorities called for a comprehensive approach covering PMC, Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority and Pune Cantonment areas. PMC subsequently prepared the revised ₹1,438-crore proposal.

The proposal has already received approval from the state government’s technical committee. It is now expected to be presented before Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Following state-level approval, the proposal will be forwarded to the Central Government for final consideration under the relevant funding framework.

The project forms part of PMC’s larger push to improve civic infrastructure in the merged villages, many of which have faced gaps in sewage disposal and other basic municipal services following their inclusion in the corporation’s limits.

If approved and implemented, the proposed network and treatment plants could significantly expand Pune’s sewage-treatment capacity and help reduce the discharge of untreated wastewater into the Mula-Mutha river system. The project would also provide dedicated sewage infrastructure to rapidly developing areas on the city’s outskirts.
