Purandar Airport: Pune Administration Takes Possession of 76% Land, October 10 Final Deadline for Holdouts
Pune administration has taken possession of 76% of land for Purandar Airport. Remaining landowners have until October 10 before compulsory acquisition begins.
Pune: The land acquisition process for the proposed Chhatrapati Sambhajiraje International Airport in Purandar has entered a crucial stage, with the Pune district administration taking possession of 980 hectares, or 76% of the 1,216 hectares required for the project.
The land is spread across seven villages in Purandar taluka – Vanpuri, Kumbharvalan, Ekhatpur, Khanwadi, Pargaon, Udachiwadi and Munjwadi.
According to the district administration, around 96% of affected farmers have agreed to provide their land for the airport. Consent has been received for approximately 1,167 hectares, although some landowners continue to oppose the acquisition of nearly 40 hectares.
The administration has now given the remaining landowners a final deadline of October 10, 2026, to provide their consent. Officials have said that land from those who do not agree by the deadline will subsequently be acquired through the compulsory acquisition process.
The development comes after the Bombay High Court dismissed a petition filed by farmers challenging the proposed airport site and land acquisition process. The court held that the technical assessment and selection of the airport location fall within the domain of experts and government policy, clearing a legal hurdle for the project.
The state government has fixed compensation at ₹1.61 crore per acre for the acquired land. Separate compensation packages are also applicable for affected trees, orchards, wells and houses. The Pune district administration has so far distributed approximately ₹3,800 crore in compensation to landowners.
The administration’s latest figures indicate that the project has moved substantially forward on the ground, although the remaining land acquisition remains an important step before the entire project area can be secured.
Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi said the administration had already taken possession of 76% of the required land and that the remaining land acquisition process was underway. He said the farmers who have not yet provided consent have been given time until October 10, after which compulsory acquisition will proceed.
The Purandar airport project is expected to require a large land parcel across the seven villages and is being positioned as Pune’s proposed new international airport. The completion of the acquisition process will be a key milestone for moving the project towards its subsequent stages.
