Pune Leads Maharashtra’s HIV Response but Rising Stigma Still Blocks Early Testing and Treatment

Pune has surpassed state HIV targets with strong testing, treatment coverage and viral suppression, but rising stigma continues to slow early diagnosis and care. PMC has intensified citywide awareness efforts ahead of World AIDS Day.

Pune| December 1, 2025:Pune has recorded Maharashtra’s strongest performance in HIV prevention and treatment this year, crossing multiple targets set by the Maharashtra State AIDS Control Society (MSACS). The district reported its highest-ever HIV testing numbers, broader ART enrolment and one of the most consistent viral suppression rates in the state. Health officials say Pune is now among the few districts moving steadily toward the national 95-95-95 goals laid out by NACO.

Even with these gains, the city continues to struggle with a growing obstacle: stigma. Doctors and outreach workers report that fear of social judgement still prevents many people from getting tested early, revealing their status, or starting treatment on time. This delay increases health risks and slows progress toward community-level viral suppression.

With World AIDS Day approaching, the Pune Municipal Corporation has stepped up awareness efforts across hospitals, colleges, schools and high-risk zones. Teams are conducting testing drives, counselling sessions and interactive campaigns aimed at correcting myths and encouraging open conversations around HIV. Officials say removing stigma is now as urgent as improving clinical outcomes.

Maharashtra’s statewide data shows steady progress, but Pune’s numbers stand out. The district’s ART coverage has expanded rapidly, and viral suppression rates indicate strong adherence to treatment. Public health experts believe Pune’s model combining accessibility, data-driven outreach and strong medical infrastructure can serve as a blueprint for other districts.

Still, they warn that meaningful change will only come when stigma reduces and people feel safe seeking help.
