To prevent crop damage by increasing wildlife, farmers in rural Satara are setting up low-cost saree fences around fields during the Rabi season.

Satara | December 13, 2025: In Satara’s rural areas, particularly in villages like Adarki Khurd, Salpe, Aljapur, Bibi, Waghoshi, Pirachiwadi, and Tathwada, farmers are taking innovative measures to protect their Rabi crops from wildlife. With jowar, wheat, chickpeas, and karadi being extensively cultivated, the number of wild animals and birds in the hilly regions has risen, increasing the risk of crop damage.

The presence of the Dhom Balkawadi project and rainfall fluctuations over the past six months has led to expanded cultivation of sugarcane and vegetables, attracting wildlife closer to farmland. Animals such as wild pigs, foxes, jackals, monkeys, and birds like peacocks, partridges, and pheasants are frequently entering fields for water and food, causing considerable damage.

To counter this, farmers have installed fences using inexpensive, brightly colored sarees around their fields. The visual deterrent has successfully discouraged many wild animals from entering the crops. Officials note that these fences provide a cost-effective and immediate solution to reduce crop loss during the peak harvesting season.

Farmers have observed that animals, particularly wild pigs, are now hesitant to approach the fields, limiting the damage to wheat, chickpeas, jowar, and maize. The initiative demonstrates a practical example of human-wildlife coexistence in hilly agricultural regions while protecting farmers’ livelihoods.

Authorities encourage continued vigilance and coordination with forest officials to ensure that both wildlife and crops are safeguarded during high-risk seasons.
