Following the death of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi, Bangladesh witnesses violent protests, media offices set ablaze, journalists endangered, and authorities scramble to restore order amid rising political tensions.
Dhaka| December 20 2025:Bangladesh has plunged into turmoil after the killing of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi, triggering widespread protests across Dhaka and other cities. Demonstrators vented their anger over his death by attacking media offices, halting newspaper printing and endangering journalists. Reports confirm that the offices of major newspapers, including Prothom Alo and The Daily Star, were set on fire, forcing authorities to evacuate trapped staff.

Hadi, a prominent activist and spokesperson for the Inqilab Mancha group, had been injured in a shooting attack and later succumbed to his injuries abroad. His death reignited simmering political tensions just months ahead of national elections, heightening public unrest and drawing international attention to Bangladesh’s fragile political environment. Protesters took to the streets chanting slogans demanding justice, while some engaged in destructive acts that disrupted daily life and threatened safety.
The interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, condemned the violence and assured that those responsible would be held accountable. Authorities deployed security forces to contain the unrest, restore order, and safeguard press institutions. Despite these measures, the attacks have raised serious concerns over press freedom, safety of journalists, and the government’s capacity to manage civil disturbances.
The situation underscores the fragile balance between political expression and public safety in Bangladesh, highlighting the challenges facing the administration as it navigates high-stakes political tensions. Analysts warn that continued unrest could further destabilize the country, disrupt civic institutions, and create long-term implications for governance and media freedom.
