In the Pune Porsche car crash case, the use of a second blood sample for DNA evidence has kept the accused’s relatives and doctors in jail for 19 months, a rare example of strong police investigation in India.
December 30, 2025 | Pune – The Pune Porsche car crash case has emerged as a landmark example of strong investigation and evidence-led policing in India, with the accused’s relatives and associated individuals remaining behind bars for 19 months due to the crucial use of a second blood sample for DNA testing. Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar has described the case as a rare, possibly first-of-its-kind instance in the country where such a long judicial custody has been ensured in a road accident case purely on the strength of forensic evidence and sustained investigation.
The case dates back to May 2024, when a minor allegedly driving a Porsche car under the influence of alcohol rammed into a two-wheeler in Pune’s Kalyaninagar area. The horrific accident claimed the lives of two young individuals, sending shockwaves across the city and the country. What initially appeared to be a tragic hit-and-run case soon unfolded into a complex criminal conspiracy involving manipulation of evidence and abuse of influence.
According to police officials, the turning point in the investigation was the decision to collect a second blood sample of the accused for DNA analysis. This move later proved critical in establishing that there had been an attempt to tamper with the original blood sample. Commissioner Amitesh Kumar stated that if the second blood sample had not been taken, several of the accused would likely have secured bail much earlier.
Following the accident, Pune Police registered additional cases after it emerged that the original driver was allegedly abducted and pressure was exerted by the accused’s relatives to manipulate the investigation. The probe revealed the involvement of multiple individuals, including family members of the accused and medical professionals, who allegedly played a role in altering or facilitating the manipulation of medical evidence.
So far, nine accused have been denied bail by the High Court. Despite as many as 174 hearings conducted in district courts and the High Court, the accused have failed to secure relief. Those still in custody include the accused’s father, businessman Vishal Agarwal, along with Arun Kumar Singh, Ashish Mittal, Aditya Sood, Ashpak Makandar, Sassoon Hospital doctors Dr Ajay Taware and Shrihari Halnor, and hospital staff member Ajit Ghatkambale. Police officials have asserted that there is no other known case in India where accused in a road accident matter have remained in custody for such an extended period.
Commissioner Kumar acknowledged that the police faced intense criticism at the initial stage for taking a second blood sample and for the aggressive course of the investigation. However, he maintained that this decision ultimately ensured justice for the victims and prevented influential accused from misusing their power to escape the law.
He further stated that strict internal action was also taken against erring police personnel involved in lapses related to the case. Two police officers were dismissed from service, and disciplinary action was initiated against others. The accused’s mother was granted bail only after 16 months, reflecting the seriousness with which the courts viewed the evidence.
The Pune Police Commissioner emphasised that the case sends a strong message that wealth and influence cannot shield anyone from accountability. He said the police are not limited to merely registering crimes, but are committed to pursuing justice for victims through every lawful means available.
As of December 30, 2025, the Pune Porsche crash case stands as a powerful example of forensic precision, judicial scrutiny, and determined policing. It reinforces public faith that even in high-profile cases involving influential individuals, justice can prevail when investigations are thorough, evidence is strong, and law enforcement remains resolute in its duty to protect the rights of victims and uphold the rule of law.
