Republic Day
Pune marked the 77th Republic Day with grand ceremonies, flag hoisting, parades, and a strong message on democracy, unity, and civic responsibility.
Pune|27 January,2026: Pune came alive with patriotic fevour and a deep sense of national pride as the city celebrated the 77th Republic Day of India on January 26 with great enthusiasm. The celebrations reflected the spirit of democracy, unity, and constitutional values, bringing together citizens, government officials, and security forces in a collective tribute to the nation. From ceremonial parades to community programs across the city, Republic Day in Pune was marked by dignity, discipline, and participation from all sections of society.
The main district-level ceremony was held at the Police Parade Ground in Shivajinagar, where Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Pune District Guardian Minister Ajit Pawar unfurled the national tricolour. Following the flag hoisting, he took the salute of an impressive parade comprising contingents of the police, home guards, and other uniformed services. The disciplined march-past symbolised the commitment of the state machinery to maintaining law, order, and public safety, while also honouring the service and sacrifice of personnel working tirelessly for citizens.
Addressing the gathering, Ajit Pawar underscored that India’s strength as the world’s largest democracy lies in its Constitution. He stated that the Constitution, framed under the leadership of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, is not merely a legal document but a guiding force that ensures equality, justice, liberty, and fraternity. He emphasised that the success of democracy depends not only on institutions but also on citizens who respect the law, uphold democratic values, and contribute positively to social harmony.
During his speech, Pawar paid heartfelt tributes to freedom fighters, both known and unknown, who sacrificed their lives for India’s independence. He also remembered the martyrs of significant historical movements such as the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement, the Goa Liberation Movement, and the Hyderabad–Marathwada Liberation struggle, acknowledging their role in shaping the present identity of Maharashtra and strengthening the federal structure of the country.

A key highlight of the ceremony was the felicitation of police officers and personnel who rendered outstanding service in maintaining public order and safety. Their dedication, especially in challenging situations, was recognised as an essential pillar of effective governance. Pawar also praised national award recipients from Maharashtra in fields including arts, sports, industry, healthcare, and social service, noting that their achievements have brought pride to the state and inspired future generations.
As part of the Republic Day celebrations, the Deputy Chief Minister flagged off a promotional vehicle for the “Swachh Pune Sankalp–2026” campaign. The initiative focuses on cleanliness, waste segregation, reduction of plastic usage, and active citizen participation in environmental conservation. Officials highlighted that civic responsibility and public cooperation are crucial to addressing urban challenges such as pollution, sanitation, and sustainable development.
Beyond the central ceremony, Republic Day was celebrated across Pune at schools, colleges, government offices, housing societies, and public institutions. Cultural programs, patriotic songs, and flag hoisting ceremonies created a festive and emotionally charged atmosphere throughout the city, reflecting India’s unity in diversity. These celebrations served as a reminder that national progress depends on collective responsibility, especially at a time when global uncertainties persist, including geopolitical tensions in West Asia involving Iran and Israel, as well as domestic concerns such as aviation safety incidents and road accidents like the Ahmedabad tragedy.
In conclusion, Pune’s Republic Day celebrations went beyond ceremonial observance and reinforced the importance of constitutional values, democratic participation, and civic duty. The event stood as a powerful reminder that safeguarding democracy requires constant effort from both institutions and citizens, making Republic Day not just a celebration, but a reaffirmation of India’s foundational ideals.
