Pune | 13 June, 2026:The long-pending Purandar airport project is steadily moving from concept to execution, with the Maharashtra government preparing to raise nearly ₹6,000 crore through loans to fund land acquisition for the proposed Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj International Airport.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed that the required funds for acquiring land would be arranged through borrowing. The decision was discussed during a high-level review meeting held in Mumbai, where the Chief Minister directed the Chief Secretary to present a detailed proposal at the state cabinet meeting scheduled for

As part of the financial plan, the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) is expected to secure loans from the Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO). Once the cabinet grants approval, the funds are likely to be made available by the end of February, paving the way for the project to move into the execution phase.

The airport project will require the acquisition of approximately 3,000 acres of land across seven villages in Purandar taluka. The state government has already announced an attractive compensation package for affected landowners. This includes a rate exceeding ₹1 crore per acre, four times the prevailing compensation amount, and an additional return of 10 per cent land as part of the rehabilitation measures.Officials indicated that if the financial arrangements proceed as planned, on-ground work could begin by mid-April. The timely availability of funds and completion of administrative approvals will be key factors in determining the project’s pace.

Chief Minister Fadnavis has also signalled that the development around the airport will follow a planned model similar to Navi Mumbai. The approach aims to ensure orderly urban growth, infrastructure development, and economic expansion around the airport zone.

With the state government pushing the project forward, Purandar is no longer viewed solely as a proposed airport site. Instead, it is increasingly being positioned as a future growth hub, expected to drive regional development, connectivity, and investment once the project takes shape.
