Aam Aadmi Party staged a protest outside Pune Municipal Corporation opposing the proposed ten percent property tax hike, calling it unjust amid inflation and demanding recovery of pending dues instead of burdening honest taxpayers.

Pune | February 06, 2026:The Pune Municipal Corporation has proposed a ten percent increase in property tax in its draft budget for the financial year 2026–27, triggering strong opposition from the Aam Aadmi Party. Party workers and leaders staged a protest outside the civic body’s headquarters on Thursday, terming the proposed hike unjustified and anti-citizen.

The proposal, presented by Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram, has been placed before the Standing Committee for consideration. AAP leaders said the move would further burden ordinary Punekars who are already struggling with rising prices while continuing to face gaps in basic civic services. The party also reminded the ruling dispensation of its pre-election promise to grant complete property tax exemption for residential units up to 500 square feet, demanding that the assurance be implemented instead of imposing fresh taxes. According to AAP, increasing taxes without fulfilling earlier commitments reflects misplaced priorities.

Citing financial data, party leaders pointed out that while the civic administration had set a property tax collection target of ₹2,800 crore in the previous budget, only around ₹2,200 crore has been collected so far. They further alleged that taxes on several commercial properties remain uncollected, while nearly ₹7,700 crore in arrears is still pending.

AAP leaders said shifting the burden onto compliant taxpayers instead of recovering long-pending dues was unacceptable. During the protest, a formal memorandum outlining these demands was submitted to the municipal commissioner, urging the administration to withdraw the proposed hike and focus on improving tax recovery and civic services.
