Pune’s first Wildlife Rapid Rescue Unit in Maval inaugurated, enhancing human-wildlife conflict response.Four teams planned district-wide to safeguard citizens and wildlife through rapid, scientific rescue operations.
Maval|Pune -February 09, 2026: In a major step towards managing human-wildlife conflicts, the Wildlife Rapid Rescue Unit (WRRU) in Maval was inaugurated on 5 February 2026. The unit aims to provide immediate, scientific, and effective responses to wildlife emergencies in Pune district.

The inauguration was presided over by Mr. Ashish Thackeray (IFS), Conservator of Forests, Pune Forest Circle (Territorial), and attended by key officials including Mr. Mahadev Mohite (IFS), Deputy Conservator of Forests, Pune (Territorial); Mr. Atul Jainak, Assistant Conservator of Forests, Baramati; Mr. Vishal Chavan, Assistant Conservator of Forests, Pune; Mrs. Sheetal Rathod, Assistant Conservator of Forests, Bhor; and Mr. Pushkar Chaubal, Honorary Wildlife Warden, Pune, along with forest staff and representatives of partner organizations.

The ceremony saw the inauguration of the WRRU’s office, rescue vehicles, cages, and other essential equipment. Mr. Mangesh Tate, controlling officer of the WRRU, spoke about the unit’s creation, objectives, and previous rescue operations, emphasizing the need for trained teams to handle conflicts between humans and wildlife safely and effectively.

Honors were presented to field officers and organizations who have contributed significantly to wildlife management. Mr. Mahadev Mohite announced that four WRRU teams will be established across Pune district, with Maval being the first. Future units will come up in Theur, Baramati-Daund, and Bhor, enhancing rapid response across the region.
In his address, Mr. Ashish Thackeray highlighted the importance of regular scientific training for forest personnel and noted that quick intervention by specialized teams can prevent loss of life and reduce harm to wildlife.
A tribute was also paid to the late Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Mr. Ajit Pawar. Officials inspected the team’s cages, vehicles, and rescue operations during the event.

With the establishment of WRRU Maval, Pune district is now better equipped to respond promptly and effectively to human-wildlife conflict situations, balancing public safety with wildlife conservation.
