Pune | 10 February 2026 – The Maharashtra Health Department has clarified that medical treatment in government-run hospitals across the state will remain completely free of cost, putting an end to speculation about the introduction of service charges. Officials confirmed that patients will not be required to pay fees for consultations, diagnostics, or inpatient treatment at public healthcare facilities, reaffirming the government’s commitment to affordable and inclusive healthcare.

The decision applies to all levels of public health infrastructure, including primary health centres, rural hospitals, district hospitals, women’s hospitals, referral centres, and super-specialty government hospitals. Authorities stated that the policy is aimed at ensuring that no patient is denied medical care due to financial constraints, particularly in rural and economically weaker regions of Maharashtra.

Health officials also made it clear that no income-based eligibility condition will be imposed to access free services.
