Maharashtra health department confirms that government hospitals will provide free treatment and services to patients across the state without cost, reinforcing universal healthcare access.
Pune | 10 February 2026 – The Maharashtra Health Department has clarified that medical treatment in government-run hospitals across the state will remain completely free of cost, putting an end to speculation about the introduction of service charges. Officials confirmed that patients will not be required to pay fees for consultations, diagnostics, or inpatient treatment at public healthcare facilities, reaffirming the government’s commitment to affordable and inclusive healthcare.

The decision applies to all levels of public health infrastructure, including primary health centres, rural hospitals, district hospitals, women’s hospitals, referral centres, and super-specialty government hospitals. Authorities stated that the policy is aimed at ensuring that no patient is denied medical care due to financial constraints, particularly in rural and economically weaker regions of Maharashtra.
Health officials also made it clear that no income-based eligibility condition will be imposed to access free services. Patients from all economic backgrounds can avail themselves of free treatment, emergency services, and essential medical procedures at government hospitals. This approach complements existing state healthcare initiatives designed to reduce out-of-pocket medical expenses and provide financial protection to families.
The clarification follows recent public concern triggered by reports suggesting that charges might be introduced for certain outpatient or diagnostic services. The health department emphasised that such interpretations were incorrect and assured citizens that core healthcare services will remain free at the point of delivery. Hospital administrators have been instructed to ensure transparency and display clear notices informing patients of their entitlement to free treatment.
Public health experts believe that continued free access to government hospitals will improve early diagnosis and treatment, reduce pressure on private healthcare facilities, and strengthen trust in the public health system. They also noted that eliminating financial barriers plays a crucial role in preventing delays in seeking medical attention, especially for chronic and emergency conditions.
As Maharashtra continues to expand its healthcare infrastructure and services, officials reiterated that free government healthcare remains a cornerstone of the state’s public health policy, aimed at protecting vulnerable populations and improving overall health outcomes.
