Twelve female students at MMIT hostel in Lohegaon fell ill after discovering worms in drinking water. College allegedly ignored complaints, prompting parents to demand action and police to record statements
Pune| February 16, 2026:Twelve female engineering students at the Marathwada Mitra Mandal Institute of Technology hostel in Lohegaon were hospitalized after discovering worms in the drinking water. Students reported that the water had been yellowish, foul-smelling, and contaminated for several weeks, despite complaints submitted in January. Photographs and videos of the water were shown to the college administration, but no immediate action was taken.
On February 12, all twelve students were admitted to Saishraddha Hospital with symptoms including vomiting, dizziness, abdominal pain, and weakness. Nine students have since been discharged, while three remain under observation. Students stated that water filters were only replaced after multiple students fell ill and that their attempts to inspect the filters were dismissed by hostel authorities.

Parents rushed to the hospital after hearing of the incident and expressed outrage at the alleged negligence. They raised concerns about ongoing construction work in the hostel, claiming it disrupted studies and posed safety hazards. Parents demanded strict action against those responsible. Local police recorded statements from the affected students on February 13, but no FIR has been registered yet. College officials stated that an internal inquiry is underway and action will be taken against anyone found responsible.
Social workers and observers emphasized the serious risks posed by contaminated drinking water in student hostels. They called for strict safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future, stressing the importance of timely response by institutions to safeguard student health.
