Western Maharashtra is preparing for the return of tigers as authorities relocate big cats from Tadoba to Sahyadri, aiming to strengthen biodiversity, restore habitats, and boost eco-tourism across Satara, Sangli and Kolhapur districts

Pune | 02March, 2026: After years of anticipation, western Maharashtra is witnessing a renewed push to restore its tiger population. The Forest Department, with the backing of both the central and state governments, has accelerated efforts to relocate tigers from the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve to the Sahyadri Tiger Reserve.

The ambitious rehabilitation initiative aims to strengthen the ecological balance of the Sahyadri landscape, covering key forest stretches including Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary and Chandoli National Park. These protected areas form a crucial corridor along the Western Ghats and are expected to provide a secure habitat for the relocated big cats.

Officials confirmed that the translocation has received necessary approvals from the National Tiger Conservation Authority. So far, three tigers have been released in phases across Chandoli and Koyna forests. The long term plan envisions introducing up to 12 tigers, subject to ongoing habitat assessments and prey base studies.

Wildlife experts believe the move will significantly improve forest health by restoring the apex predator’s role in the ecosystem. Increased tiger presence is also expected to curb overgrazing by herbivores and maintain ecological equilibrium.

Beyond conservation, authorities are optimistic about the economic ripple effect. The project is likely to boost eco-tourism in districts such as Satara, Sangli and Kolhapur, creating opportunities for homestays, local guides and small businesses. While the groundwork has begun, forest officials say continuous monitoring and community participation will be key to ensuring the long term success of this landmark conservation effort.
