₹45,000 Crore Mega Road Plan Announced to Decongest Pune and Strengthen Regional Connectivity
Six major highway projects worth ₹45,000 crore are planned to ease traffic congestion around Pune and improve connectivity across western Maharashtra, linking key industrial and urban centres through upgraded road corridors.
Pune | 07 March, 2026: In a significant move to address rising traffic congestion and support regional connectivity, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announced a large-scale road infrastructure initiative valued at nearly ₹45,000 crore. The plan includes six major highway and corridor projects designed to enhance transport efficiency across western Maharashtra.

The announcement followed discussions with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar regarding long-term solutions to increasing traffic pressure in and around Pune, one of the state’s fastest-growing urban regions. Among the most significant proposals is the Pune–Shambhajinagar Green Corridor, a 192.5-kilometre highway project estimated at around ₹15,000 crore. Once completed, the corridor is expected to reduce travel time between Pune and Aurangabad (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar) to nearly two and a half hours, improving mobility between key economic zones.

Another important project is the Pune–Shirur corridor, spanning about 53 kilometres with an estimated investment of ₹7,515 crore. The route is expected to ease congestion on existing roads and facilitate smoother movement toward eastern districts. The Talegaon–Chakan–Shikrapur road project will further strengthen access to the rapidly expanding industrial belt around Chakan, a major manufacturing hub.

Infrastructure upgrades are also planned for the Pune-Solapur stretch between Hadapsar and Yavat, covering roughly 31.5 kilometres. Additionally, the Nashik Phata-Khed road project, valued at around ₹7,808 crore, has already completed most of its land acquisition process and is expected to move forward soon.Elevated road sections along the Satara-Kagal corridor are also part of the broader development strategy aimed at improving regional connectivity.
