The Goregaon-Mulund Link Road project in Mumbai has reached a key milestone, with tunnel excavation machinery set to be installed from March 10 to accelerate construction of the crucial east-west connectivity corridor
Mumbai | 07 March , 2026: Construction of the much-anticipated Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project in Mumbai has entered an important phase, as preparations begin for the installation of tunnel boring machines that will carve out the twin tunnels connecting the city’s eastern and western suburbs.

Officials confirmed that the launching shaft required for the tunnel excavation has been completed near Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari in Goregaon. The next stage involves lowering the tunnel boring machines (TBMs) into the shaft, a process scheduled to begin from March 10.
According to civic authorities, the large-scale machinery will be assembled underground before actual tunnelling operations commence. Two advanced TBM machines will be used to dig the twin tunnels, which are expected to play a crucial role in reducing travel time between the eastern and western parts of the city.

The project site was recently inspected by Mumbai civic officials, including Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar, who reviewed the ongoing work and directed engineers to maintain the pace of construction. During the inspection, officials also assessed progress on the flyover being built at Ratnagiri Junction, with instructions to complete it and open it for traffic by May 31, ahead of the monsoon season.
Heavy cranes with lifting capacities of 800 and 350 metric tonnes will be deployed to install key components of the TBM machinery, including the cutter head and main shield. Once assembled, the machines will begin the complex process of boring through the terrain to create the twin tunnels.

The Goregaon–Mulund Link Road project is considered one of Mumbai’s major infrastructure initiatives aimed at improving east-west connectivity. Once completed, the corridor is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion and provide a safer and faster commuting option for residents travelling between the suburbs.
