Pune | 07 March, 2026: Health authorities are closely monitoring reports of increasing cases of Guillain‑Barré Syndrome (GBS), a rare neurological disorder in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the peripheral nerves. Medical experts say the condition can lead to symptoms such as muscle weakness, tingling sensations in the hands and feet, and in severe cases, temporary paralysis. While most patients recover with proper treatment, early diagnosis and timely medical care are considered crucial.

Doctors explain that GBS is often triggered by infections, including viral or bacterial illnesses. In some cases, the disorder can appear a few weeks after respiratory infections or gastrointestinal illnesses. The condition affects the nervous system by damaging the protective covering of nerves, disrupting signals between the brain and muscles.

Experts emphasise that although the condition is rare, rapid medical intervention is essential. Treatments such as intravenous immunoglobulin therapy and plasma exchange are commonly used to reduce the immune system’s attack on the nerves and help patients recover faster.

Public health officials have urged citizens to seek immediate medical attention if they experience sudden weakness, difficulty walking, or numbness in limbs following an infection. Early treatment significantly improves recovery outcomes and reduces the risk of complications
