Gas-based crematoriums across Pune have been temporarily closed after a central government directive prioritised propane and butane for domestic LPG supply, while electric cremation facilities remain operational for citizens

Pune | 09 March, 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has temporarily closed gas-based crematoriums within its jurisdiction following a directive issued by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Government of India, prioritising propane and butane supplies for domestic LPG consumption across the country.

According to the order issued on March 5, 2026, available stocks of propane and butane are to be used primarily for household LPG cylinders. As a result, the supply of gas required for non-domestic uses has been affected, leading to a temporary shortage for civic facilities such as gas-based crematorium furnaces.

In compliance with the directive, gas-based crematoriums operating under PMC limits have been shut from March 5 until further orders. However, two gas-based crematorium units supplied by Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited (MNGL) at the Bibvewadi crematorium remain operational. Civic authorities have advised residents from the Dhankawadi and Katraj areas to utilise these facilities for cremations.

To avoid inconvenience to citizens, the PMC has ensured that electric crematoriums and systems equipped with Air Pollution Control (APC) technology will continue to function normally. At the Vaikunth crematorium, three gas-based furnaces have been temporarily shut, while five electric cremation units will remain operational to handle funeral services.

Civic officials have also appealed to citizens to make use of electric crematoriums located in different parts of the city to reduce pressure on the Vaikunth facility. These include crematoriums at Yerawada near Gunjan Chowk on Nagar Road, Kharadi village, Kailash crematorium near SSPMS ground in Sangamwadi, Guruganesh Nagar in Kothrud, Aundh-Baner Link Road in Baner, and Ganganagar in Hadapsar.

The civic administration has requested citizens to cooperate with the temporary arrangement to ensure smooth functioning of cremation services across the city.
