More than 7,000 electricity connections in Pune have been cut after unpaid power bills crossed ₹319.5 crore, prompting MSEDCL to intensify its recovery drive before the end of the financial year.

13 March, 2026 | Pune :The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited has disconnected electricity supply to thousands of consumers in Pune as part of a major recovery drive against unpaid power bills. Officials said the action comes after outstanding electricity dues in the Pune circle reached ₹319.5 crore.According to the power distribution company, a total of 7,122 electricity connections were disconnected between March 1 and March 9, 2026. Of these, 1,725 were permanently disconnected while 5,397 connections were temporarily suspended due to non-payment of bills. The action is part of a larger campaign launched ahead of the financial year-end to reduce mounting arrears.

Authorities said that unpaid electricity dues are spread across multiple categories of consumers. Domestic users account for ₹74.81 crore in outstanding payments, while commercial consumers owe around ₹31.53 crore. Industrial consumers have pending dues of ₹18.36 crore. In addition, public lighting services owe ₹96.14 crore and water supply systems have dues of ₹87.5 crore, contributing significantly to the total arrears.

Officials stated that special recovery teams have been deployed across different divisions in Pune to speed up the process. Disconnection of electricity supply, they said, is usually considered a last step after repeated reminders and notices to defaulting consumers. In some cases, utility staff have also reported facing resistance and verbal threats during recovery visits. Complaints have been filed at local police stations following incidents where field staff were allegedly confronted by consumers during inspections. The power utility has urged consumers to clear pending dues to avoid inconvenience. Officials also noted that consumers can receive a small rebate on online bill payments and may be required to pay reconnection charges once supply is restored after disconnection.
