Government Exploring Possibility of Mobile Data Usage Tax as Telecom Authorities Begin Feasibility Study
The government is reportedly examining the possibility of introducing a tax on mobile data usage and has asked the Department of Telecommunications to study whether such a levy could be implemented.
New Delhi | March 14, 2026: The Union government is reportedly exploring the possibility of introducing a new tax on mobile data usage as part of discussions on revenue generation from the rapidly expanding telecom sector. According to media reports, the proposal surfaced during a review meeting focused on developments in the telecommunications industry and rising data consumption across the country.Officials indicated that the idea remains at a preliminary stage and no final decision has been taken so far. Any move to introduce such a tax would likely follow a detailed assessment of its financial implications and the possible effect on digital adoption in the country.

Sources familiar with the matter said the government has asked the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to conduct a detailed study on whether imposing a tax on mobile data usage is feasible. The department has reportedly been tasked with examining both the potential benefits and the economic impact of such a move on consumers and the telecom sector. One of the options being considered includes imposing a small levy of around ₹1 per gigabyte of data used. If implemented, the proposal could lead to additional charges for mobile internet users each time they consume data through their smartphones or other connected devices.

India currently has some of the lowest mobile data costs in the world, which has contributed to a sharp rise in internet usage. Rapid growth in video streaming, social media platforms, online gaming and short-form video content has significantly increased overall data consumption. Government officials have not issued any formal statement on the matter yet, and a final decision is expected only after the telecom department completes its study and submits its recommendations.
