Maharashtra Emerges as IT Powerhouse; Software Exports Cross ₹2 Lakh Crore Milestone
Maharashtra’s software exports have surged over 300% in a decade, reaching ₹2.12 lakh crore in 2024–25, reinforcing its position as a leading IT hub with strong growth prospects.
March 27, 2026 | Kolhapur Maharashtra has firmly established itself as a leading technology hub in India, with software exports witnessing remarkable growth over the past decade. According to a report by Software Technology Parks of India, the state’s software exports have increased by more than 300 percent, rising from ₹64,063 crore in 2015–16 to a record ₹2,12,710 crore in 2024–25.
The consistent upward trajectory highlights the growing dominance of the IT sector in the state’s economy. Even after the global slowdown triggered by the pandemic, exports accelerated significantly, crossing ₹1.25 lakh crore in 2021–22 and nearly doubling within three years. In the ongoing financial year 2025–26, exports have already reached approximately ₹1.77 lakh crore by January, with expectations of surpassing last year’s record by March-end. nThe surge in software exports has not only boosted foreign exchange inflows but also created large-scale employment opportunities for skilled professionals. Major urban centres like Pune and Mumbai have played a crucial role in driving this growth, supported by a thriving startup ecosystem and favourable government policies.
Kolhapur has also emerged as a significant contributor, ranking third in the state’s software exports with around ₹300 crore. Officials believe that the upcoming IT park in the district will further enhance its position, potentially pushing it among the top contributors in the near future. Software exports from Maharashtra include a wide range of services such as coding, testing, IT consultancy, cloud services, and data management for global clients, particularly in the US and Europe. Despite global economic uncertainties, the state’s IT units have maintained strong export performance, positioning the sector as a key engine of future economic growth.
