New Delhi | : Thursday, March 19, 2026 Rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have disrupted global oil supplies, prompting India to ramp up imports from Russia. In a striking development, multiple Russian oil tankers en route to China have executed sharp U-turns at sea, redirecting toward Indian refineries. This move underscores India’s strategic push to secure energy needs amid volatile markets.

The tanker “Aqua Titan,” fully loaded with Russian crude, departed from a Baltic Sea port in late January carrying Urals-grade oil destined for China’s Rizhao port. It sailed steadily until reaching the South China Sea, where it suddenly altered its trajectory. Tracking data now shows the vessel speeding toward New Mangalore port on India’s west coast, with an expected arrival on March 21. This 11-year-old Aframax tanker, flagged under Liberia, represents a significant windfall for Indian refiners seeking discounted Russian barrels.

Adding to the influx, another tanker, “Zhozhou N,” is also heading to India. Loaded with CPC Blend crude from Kazakhstan’s CPC terminal, it is projected to dock at Sikka port by March 25. These diversions highlight Russia’s growing pivot toward India as a key buyer, especially after Western sanctions curtailed exports to Europe. India has emerged as the world’s third-largest oil importer and top purchaser of Russian seaborne crude since the Ukraine conflict escalated.

This realignment comes as India accelerates purchases to offset potential shortages from Middle East flare-ups. Government data shows Russian oil imports hit record highs last year, comprising over 40% of India’s total seaborne crude arrivals. Refiners like Reliance Industries at Jamnagar and Nayara Energy are prime beneficiaries, processing discounted Urals and Sokol grades.

In a related note, the Indian vessel “Jah Ladki” arrived at Mundra port in Gujarat’s Kutch region on Wednesday, delivering 80,800 metric tons of crude. Industry experts predict more such reroutings, stabilizing domestic fuel prices and bolstering energy security
