Pune Metro Line 3’s first phase will launch 12 stations on the 23-km Hinjawadi-Shivajinagar elevated corridor by May 2026, promising relief for thousands of IT commuters battling daily gridlock.

Friday, March 20, 2026 | Pune, Maharashtra: Commuters in Pune’s bustling IT hub can look forward to smoother travels as the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) gears up to operationalize 12 stations on the long-delayed Hinjawadi-Shivajinagar Metro Line 3 by May 2026. The 23-km fully elevated corridor, developed under a public-private partnership with Tata-led Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited (PITCMRL), stands at 94% completion. Trial runs are underway, paving the way for a phased rollout. The initial phase targets key stretches from Hinjawadi Phase 3 to central areas like Baner and Aundh, directly linking the tech park home to over 4 lakh professionals to Shivajinagar and Civil Court.

Union Minister Murlidhar Mohol confirmed the timeline during a March review, instructing a Detailed Project Report for an extended 25-km Hinjawadi-Khadakwasla line. Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis announced a two-phase launch: the first 11-km section in May and the remaining 12-km by July, addressing repeated delays from earlier targets like March 2026. IT groups like the Forum for IT Employees (FITE) have long advocated phased openings to alleviate notorious Hinjawadi traffic jams, which daily trap lakhs in hours-long snarls. Once live, the line with 24 stations total will slash commute times, boost productivity, and cut emissions in Pune’s exploding western suburbs.

Safety certifications and final viaducts remain hurdles, but PMRDA officials affirm the project is on track. This milestone caps years of anticipation, positioning Pune as a metro-savvy city amid India’s urban transit boom
