Five-Day Ceasefire Eases Tensions as Trump Pauses Iran Strike Plan

A temporary halt to planned US Trump strikes on Iran’s energy infrastructure signals easing tensions, boosting global markets and offering relief to volatile oil prices amid ongoing diplomatic engagement.

March 24 | Washington: US President Donald Trump has ordered a five-day suspension of potential airstrikes targeting Iran’s power plants and energy infrastructure, in a move seen as an attempt to de-escalate rising tensions in the Middle East and stabilise global energy markets. The decision follows what Trump described as “productive and positive” discussions with Iran over the past two days. The proposed strikes were initially linked to ensuring uninterrupted oil transit through the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz. However, escalating rhetoric particularly Iran’s warning of a possible shutdown of the Pacific Gulf shipping routes triggered sharp reactions across global financial markets, with stocks tumbling amid fears of a wider conflict.
Following the ceasefire announcement, markets showed signs of recovery, reflecting cautious optimism among investors. Oil prices, which had surged due to concerns over potential supply disruptions, also stabilised, offering relief to energy-importing nations. In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump indicated that the talks with Iran could pave the way toward a broader resolution of tensions in the region. He added that the next course of action would depend on the outcome of ongoing diplomatic efforts.

Strategic analysts suggest the pause may represent a calculated effort by Washington to step back from the brink of military escalation. Some have described the move as a “face-saving exit strategy,” allowing room for negotiations while maintaining pressure. Meanwhile, Iran’s foreign ministry, quoted by the Mehr News Agency, dismissed Trump’s statements as a tactical manoeuvre aimed at lowering global energy prices while buying time for military planning. Tehran reiterated that it had not engaged in direct talks with Washington and emphasised that mediation efforts by regional countries should be directed towards the United States. With geopolitical tensions still simmering, the coming days are expected to be crucial in determining whether diplomacy can prevent further escalation.
