Mumbai | March 25, 2026 A recent financial and infrastructure audit has revealed a troubling picture of the state’s education system, with as many as 890 schools lacking basic toilet facilities for girls. The report also points to widespread deficiencies in essential infrastructure such as boundary walls, playgrounds, and access to digital resources, raising concerns over student safety and quality of education. According to the findings, a significant number of schools continue to function without fundamental amenities, affecting both attendance and learning outcomes especially for girl students. The absence of separate and functional toilets has been flagged as a major reason behind irregular attendance and dropouts among girls.

The audit further underscores a stark digital divide. Around 11.1% of schools reportedly do not have internet access, while nearly 4.4% lack functional computers. This gap severely limits the implementation of digital learning initiatives, which have become increasingly important in modern education systems. In addition, overcrowding remains a pressing issue, with an average of 40 students per classroom in several schools. Basic facilities such as electricity, safe drinking water, and secure premises are also inadequate in many institutions.

Education experts warn that these shortcomings could undermine the objectives of national education reforms and widen inequalities among students. They have called for urgent intervention by the government to address infrastructure gaps, improve digital access, and ensure a safe learning environment. The report serves as a wake-up call for authorities to prioritize investments in school infrastructure and bridge the digital divide to ensure inclusive and quality education for all.
