Nearly 68 lakh beneficiary accounts under the Maharashtra government’s flagship Ladki Bahin Yojana have been closed after recipients failed to complete the mandatory e-KYC process within the prescribed deadline, officials said. The move has significantly reduced the number of active accounts under the women-focused welfare scheme, which provides monthly financial assistance to eligible beneficiaries.

Mumbai, April 3 | According to government officials, the total number of registered accounts under the scheme stood at around 2.43 crore, out of which approximately 68 lakh accounts were shut down after beneficiaries did not complete e-KYC before March 31. As a result, the active beneficiary base has now fallen to about 1.75 crore. However, officials indicated that the number of closed accounts may change as the government has extended the e-KYC deadline till April 30.

The verification drive was initiated following complaints that ineligible individuals were receiving benefits under the scheme. Reports suggested that several accounts were linked to male members and government employees, raising concerns over misuse of public funds. The state government subsequently intensified scrutiny and pushed for completion of identity verification to ensure that only eligible women from financially weaker sections receive the monthly allowance of ₹1,500.

Officials said the e-KYC process has been extended multiple times since November 2025 to provide adequate time for beneficiaries to comply. The scheme currently requires the government to disburse nearly ₹3,700 crore every month. With the closure of a large number of accounts, the monthly financial outgo is expected to reduce temporarily, though it may rise again if beneficiaries complete the verification process within the extended deadline.

The Ladki Bahin Yojana was launched by the Mahayuti government ahead of the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections and remains one of the state’s biggest welfare initiatives. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde have reiterated that the scheme will continue and that no recovery will be made from those later found ineligible.
