US Army Chief Fired as Pentagon Shake-Up Deepens; Attorney General Also Removed
In a rare wartime decision, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has removed Army Chief Gen. Randy George, along with other senior commanders, while President Donald Trump has dismissed Attorney General Pam Bondi.

April 4, 2026 | Washington: In an unprecedented wartime move, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has removed Army Chief of Staff General Randy George from his post, intensifying a wave of leadership changes inside the Pentagon as America expands its military posture in the Middle East. According to US officials cited by Reuters, Hegseth also dismissed General David Hodne, head of the Army’s Transformation and Training Command, and Major General William Green, who was serving as chief of the Army Chaplain Corps. The dismissals are being viewed as part of a wider restructuring of senior military positions underway in the Defence Department.
The Pentagon confirmed General George’s departure, stating that he is stepping down immediately as the 41st Chief of Staff of the US Army. Officials noted that George still had more than a year remaining in his term. While the department praised his decades of service and wished him well in retirement, it did not specify the exact reason behind the removal. The decision comes at a time when the United States is reportedly increasing its military presence in West Asia and intensifying operations linked to Iran, adding to the significance of the leadership overhaul.

In another major development, President Donald Trump has removed Attorney General Pam Bondi from office. Bondi, who had been leading the Justice Department for nearly a year, has reportedly come under criticism over the handling of matters connected to the Jeffrey Epstein case. Her removal adds to the political and administrative turbulence in Washington. Sources said General Christopher Laney, Hegseth’s former military adviser and the Army’s vice chief, will take charge as acting Army Chief. One official indicated that even senior Army leadership reportedly learned of George’s dismissal only after the news became public, highlighting the suddenness of the move.
While no open conflict between Hegseth and George had been visible, the Defence Secretary has drawn controversy in recent months for decisions such as removing the Army’s top legal officer and planning a large-scale military parade on Trump’s birthday to mark the Army’s 250th anniversary.
