Meta Builds New AI Hardware Division, Hires Veteran Engineer to Lead Mysterious AI Device Initiative

Meta is quietly assembling a dedicated AI hardware team under its Superintelligence Labs, signalling a strategic push into AI-powered devices beyond existing wearables and smart glasses.

April 5, 2026 | New Delhi: Meta Platforms, led by Mark Zuckerberg, is taking a significant step in the hardware frontier of artificial intelligence by establishing a new hardware division within its Superintelligence Labs (MSL) and hiring veteran engineer Rui Xu to lead it. The move, reported by multiple industry sources, reflects Meta’s intent to develop next-generation AI devices beyond the scope of its current smart glasses and virtual reality headsets produced by Reality Labs and positions the company to compete more directly with rivals advancing AI-native gadgets. Rui Xu, who has been tapped to head the newly formed team, previously led hardware efforts at AI agent startup Dreamer, which Meta recently acqui-hired. Xu brings with him deep experience from roles at major tech firms including ByteDance, Xiaomi, Lenovo and Tencent, where he worked on hardware development and product teams. This breadth of expertise underscores Meta’s ambition to blend AI innovation with cutting-edge device engineering.
The hardware initiative is being quietly built out under the broader Superintelligence Labs umbrella, which was launched last year to drive research into advanced AI systems capable of deeply personalised interaction. Some engineers from Reality Labs are reportedly transitioning to MSL, suggesting close collaboration between divisions as Meta prototypes its AI vision on existing and future hardware platforms.

MSL chief Alexandr Wang has previously hinted at a future where AI agents are available across multiple devices, offering continuous, contextual assistance by “seeing what you see and hearing what you hear.” While Meta has not officially detailed any specific device plans, this new hardware team led by an experienced engineer signals a strategic shift toward integrating AI more deeply into personal tech hardware. This development comes as other industry players such as OpenAI and Apple explore bespoke AI-driven consumer hardware, intensifying competition in the race for AI-centric devices that go beyond traditional smartphones and wearables.
