Maharashtra government has provided ₹128 crore relief to over 1.8 lakh farmers affected by unseasonal rains between October and December 2025, with widespread crop losses reported across multiple districts.

April 8, 2026 | Mumbai : The Government of Maharashtra has disbursed financial assistance of ₹128.65 crore to 1,80,574 farmers affected by unseasonal rainfall between October and December 2025, officials informed during a recent cabinet meeting. The unseasonal showers during this period impacted approximately 1.14 lakh hectares of agricultural land across the state. The worst-affected districts included Chandrapur, Dhule, Gadchiroli, Jalgaon, Nashik, Raigad and Sindhudurg, where significant crop losses were recorded.

Subsequent rainfall between January and March 2026 further aggravated the situation, damaging crops over 1.45 lakh hectares and affecting 2,33,890 farmers. Key crops such as banana, onion, papaya, mango, grapes, wheat, gram and jowar suffered extensive losses. Districts including Latur, Solapur, Nashik, Satara, Dhule, Nandurbar, Yavatmal, Ahilyanagar, Pune, Jalna, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Buldhana and Beed were among the most impacted. The unseasonal weather events also led to human and livestock casualties, with five deaths reported, nine individuals injured and 36 animals lost. In April, preliminary estimates indicate further damage to crops spread over 1.22 lakh hectares, affecting nearly 1.94 lakh farmers. Assessment procedures for compensation are currently underway.

Meanwhile, the state highlighted progress in irrigation infrastructure. Since July 2022, the Water Resources Department Maharashtra has completed 41 projects, generating around 105 TMC of water storage and creating an additional irrigation capacity of 2.95 lakh hectares. Authorities also noted that 225 irrigation projects have received revised administrative approvals, with an estimated investment of ₹4.35 lakh crore. Upon completion, these projects are expected to generate irrigation potential for 33.45 lakh hectares, aimed at strengthening long-term agricultural resilience.
