Iran Offers US Deal on Hormuz Strait, Defers Nuclear Talks Amid Sanctions Demand
Iran has proposed easing control over the Hormuz Strait in exchange for lifting US sanctions, while postponing nuclear programme discussions, raising uncertainty over future negotiations and global trade stability
Washington | 29 April 2026: Iran has put forward a fresh proposal to the United States, signalling its willingness to ease pressure over the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz in exchange for the removal of economic, trade, and maritime sanctions imposed by Washington.

The proposal, reportedly conveyed through Pakistan, suggests that discussions on Iran’s nuclear programme could be taken up at a later stage. This approach, however, has not aligned with the stance of Donald Trump and his administration, which considers halting Iran’s nuclear ambitions as central to any broader agreement.
US officials have expressed reservations, viewing the proposal as incomplete without immediate commitments on the nuclear issue. Trump indicated that the US holds the upper hand and expects Iran to initiate serious engagement if it seeks a deal, leaving the future of talks uncertain.

Amid these developments, Abbas Araghchi has been in contact with mediators from Pakistan, Egypt, Turkey, and Qatar. He reportedly acknowledged that there is no unified position within Iran’s leadership regarding US demands, further complicating the negotiation process. In a related move, the US cancelled a planned visit of its special envoys to Islamabad, signalling a pause in diplomatic momentum. The decision reflects Washington’s reluctance to pursue discussions it views as unproductive at this stage.
The situation carries broader implications beyond bilateral ties. The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most vital oil transit routes, and any shift in control or tension in the region could significantly impact global energy markets and trade flows.
