Maharashtra Targets 30 Billion Tree Plantation Drive by 2047, Plans New Green Commission

TREE
27 Lakh Hectares Land Required; State Also Approves Ambedkar Chair at LSE and New Kendriya Vidyalaya in Raigad

Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has announced an ambitious plan to plant 300 crore (30 billion) trees by 2047, aiming to significantly increase the state’s forest and green cover. To achieve this massive target, officials estimate that nearly 27 lakh hectares of land will be required for plantation activities across the state.
As part of the initiative, the state is also preparing to establish a dedicated ‘Maharashtra Commission’ to monitor, regulate, and implement the tree plantation programme effectively. The commission will be responsible for long-term planning, ensuring survival rates of plantations, and coordinating with local bodies and departments.
Currently, Maharashtra has only 21.25% forest cover, while the state’s long-term goal is to raise overall tree and forest coverage to 33%, in line with national environmental objectives and sustainability commitments.
Meanwhile, the Maharashtra cabinet also cleared key decisions related to education and welfare. One of the major announcements includes the establishment of a Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Chair at the London School of Economics (LSE). Along with this, the state will provide scholarships to students pursuing doctoral studies, ensuring greater academic support and international research opportunities.

In another significant decision, the cabinet approved the setting up of a Kendriya Vidyalaya in Mauje Navne village in Raigad district, which is expected to benefit students in the region and strengthen access to quality central education infrastructure.
The cabinet decisions reflect the government’s focus on environmental sustainability, educational expansion, and strengthening student support systems in Maharashtra.
