A late-night gas leak from a chemical unit near Gangadham Chowk in Pune led to 24 hospitalisations, as swift fire brigade action prevented a potentially larger catastrophe.

Pune | 30 April 2026: A serious gas leak incident near Gangadham Chowk created panic late Wednesday night after toxic fumes spread from a chemical storage tank, affecting residents in the surrounding area.

According to officials from the Pune Fire Brigade, the leakage occurred around midnight near the vicinity of Aai Mata Temple, leading to breathing difficulties among several people. Emergency teams rushed to the spot equipped with breathing apparatus to manage the situation.

Fire personnel carried out immediate rescue operations and safely evacuated 17 affected individuals. Of these, 14 were shifted to nearby hospitals using 108 emergency ambulance services for treatment. In total, at least 24 people were hospitalised due to exposure to the toxic gas.

The operation also impacted responders, with one fire officer and a firefighter experiencing breathing issues during the rescue effort and requiring medical attention.

Under the leadership of Chief Fire Officer Devendra Potphode, a team comprising five officers and around 30 personnel worked on-site to control the situation. Four fire engines, including a specialised breathing apparatus unit, were deployed to contain the leak and prevent it from escalating further.Officials stated that timely intervention by the fire brigade helped avert a major disaster in the densely populated area. Authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the exact cause of the gas leak.
