Hinjawadi Flooding Warning: PMRDA Sets Deadline, Officials Face Action if Waterlogging Continues

PMRDA warns strict action against officials if Hinjawadi flooding persists; May 31 deadline set for drainage and pre-monsoon works.

Pune, 30 April, 2026:In a strong pre-monsoon move, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority has issued a stern warning to officials, making it clear that accountability will be fixed if flooding continues in the Hinjawadi IT Park during the upcoming monsoon. The directive comes after years of recurring waterlogging in the IT hub, which disrupts traffic, office operations, and daily life. At a high-level disaster management meeting held in Akurdi, PMRDA Commissioner Abhijit Chaudhari stated that any flooding caused due to negligence, poor planning, or incomplete work could lead to strict action under the Disaster Management Act, especially if it results in damage to public property or risk to life.

The administration has set a firm deadline of May 31, 2026, for completing all drainage-related and pre-monsoon infrastructure works in Hinjawadi and nearby Maan areas. Authorities have been instructed to immediately clean, widen, and deepen major drains, remove encroachments blocking natural water flow, and ensure that stormwater is discharged smoothly through natural channels. This comes in response to repeated flooding incidents every monsoon, where even moderate rainfall has led to severe water accumulation and traffic congestion across key IT corridors.

To avoid past mistakes, multiple agencies including PMRDA, MIDC, NHAI, local gram panchayats, and the irrigation department have been directed to work in coordination rather than in silos. Officials have also been warned against shifting responsibility, with clear instructions that on-ground execution will be closely monitored. In addition, police inputs have identified several “black spots” in the Hinjawadi area that are highly prone to waterlogging, and targeted measures are being planned to address them before the monsoon arrives.

The urgency of this directive reflects growing pressure on authorities, as Hinjawadi continues to expand as a major IT and business hub. Persistent flooding not only affects lakhs of commuters but also raises concerns about infrastructure planning and urban management in one of Pune’s fastest-growing zones. With a strict deadline in place and clear warnings issued, the focus now shifts to timely execution. Whether this year brings relief or repeats past disruptions will depend on how effectively these measures are implemented on the ground.
