CM Devendra Fadnavis said the state would pursue the maximum punishment, including the death penalty, in the Nasrapur child rape and murder case, and ensure the trial proceeds on a fast track strictly within the framework of law
Mumbai | 04 May 2026: Addressing the media, Fadnavis said public anger over the incident in Nasrapur, Pune district, was understandable. He stated that a written assurance for speedy justice had been given to the victim’s father and that the government’s focus was on filing the chargesheet promptly and expediting court proceedings through appropriate legal channels. “We are committed to ensuring there is no legal loophole and that the case moves swiftly,” he said.
Referring to protests held on Saturday night near Navale Bridge in Pune, the Chief Minister noted that while emotions were running high, actions must remain within democratic and legal bounds. He reiterated that punishment would be sought through due process and not through unlawful means, even as some demonstrators demanded instant retribution.

Fadnavis added that investigators were compiling details of the criminal past record as part of the broader probe. He maintained that the gravity of the present offence itself warranted the strictest legal response and that the state would present a strong case in court.
The Chief Minister also criticised opposition parties for, in his view, attempting to give the incident a political turn. He said criticism was part of democracy but urged rivals to avoid statements that could distract from the legal process. He further mentioned that he had spoken twice with the victim’s father to explain the steps being taken to secure justice and thanked the family for their cooperation during a difficult time.
Separately, Amit Thackeray of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena alleged that criminals no longer fear the law and called for stricter on-ground enforcement. He questioned why existing legal provisions were not being implemented more assertively and said the police should be given operational freedom to act decisively against serious offenders.

Fadnavis said the government would stand firmly with the victim’s family and ensure the judicial process is completed at the earliest, emphasising that justice must be delivered lawfully, swiftly, and transparently.
