May 4, 2026 | New Delhi: India has achieved a significant breakthrough in its growing private space sector with the successful launch of ‘Drishti’, a cutting-edge satellite developed by a Bengaluru-based space technology startup. The satellite was launched aboard a SpaceX rocket from California at 12.29 pm (Indian time) on Sunday, marking a major step forward for India’s space-based surveillance capabilities.

The advanced satellite is being described as India’s “third eye”, particularly in the context of increasing security challenges along the borders with Pakistan and China. Officials and experts believe the satellite will play a crucial role in border monitoring and strategic missions linked to national security.

Weighing around 990 kilograms, ‘Drishti’ is considered the first large satellite built by an Indian private company. It is equipped with a multi-spectral camera and a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imaging system, making it one of the world’s first satellites to combine such advanced technology for detailed observation.

A key advantage of SAR technology is its ability to capture sharp and accurate images even in harsh weather conditions, darkness, cloud cover, or fog, ensuring uninterrupted monitoring. This capability is expected to strengthen India’s defence preparedness, surveillance operations, and emergency response planning.

Apart from security-related missions, the satellite is also expected to support disaster management, agriculture monitoring, infrastructure planning, and insurance assessment. Experts noted that if such technology had been available earlier, the damage assessment of major terror incidents could have been carried out with higher accuracy and speed. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated the team behind the project, calling the mission a major achievement for India’s space efforts and a symbol of innovation and ambition in the private sector. The successful deployment of ‘Drishti’ highlights India’s rapid progress in commercial space technology and reinforces its position as an emerging global space power.
