Pune | May 6, 2026:In a significant move aimed at providing relief to citizens during the peak of the summer season, Mayor Manjusha Nagpure has issued explicit instructions to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to refrain from implementing any water cuts until the end of May. The decision comes amidst rising temperatures and growing concerns regarding the water storage levels in the dams supplying the city.

The Mayor’s directive was issued following a high-level review meeting with senior officials of the PMC Water Supply Department. During the session, Nagpure emphasized the necessity of maintaining a consistent water supply to meet the domestic demands of the growing population, especially as the heatwave intensifies. While several areas in the outskirts had reported pressure fluctuations and irregular supply schedules, the new mandate seeks to stabilize distribution across all administrative zones of the city.

The water department had previously been considering regulated cuts to conserve the remaining stock in the Khadakwasla, Panshet, Varasgaon, and Temghar dams until the arrival of the monsoon. However, the Mayor noted that current storage levels, while requiring careful management, are sufficient to sustain the city without immediate rationing. She further instructed officials to expedite repairs on leaking pipelines and tackle the issue of illegal water pumps, which often lead to artificial scarcity in certain neighborhoods.

Municipal Commissioner and other department heads have been asked to monitor the daily discharge closely and ensure that technical glitches do not disrupt the Mayor’s “no-cut” policy. Citizens are encouraged to use water judiciously to assist the administration in managing the reserves effectively until the rainy season commences. This proactive stance by the Mayor’s office is seen as a vital intervention to prevent a summer water crisis in the IT and education hub.
