Maharashtra Government Moves to Fully Nominate Medical Council After Election Results

Maharashtra
Maharashtra government is transitioning the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) to a 100% nominated body, expanding it to 23 members and effectively bypassing recent election results where independent candidates saw significant success.
Mumbai | 08 May 2026: The Maharashtra state cabinet has approved a major amendment to the Maharashtra Medical Council Act, shifting the body from an elective system to a fully government-nominated one. The council’s size will increase from 18 to 23 members, all of whom will now be appointed directly by the state government.

This legislative change follows the April 2026 MMC elections, which saw a notable victory for independent and non-aligned candidates over the state-backed panels. The timing of the move has sparked intense debate, with critics and medical organizations viewing it as an attempt to undermine the autonomy of the medical regulatory body. While the government maintains that the change aligns the MMC with the National Medical Commission (NMC) structure to improve efficiency, the medical fraternity has expressed concerns over the loss of democratic representation.
In the recent elections, Dr. Sanjay Sahebrao Kadam from Nanded emerged as the top scorer, while Pune’s Dr. Sunil Madhavrao Ingale also secured a winning seat. Notably, Pune’s Dr. Sanjay Patil lost by a narrow margin of only three votes. The winners now face uncertainty as the government moves toward a hand-picked administrative structure.
The winning nine candidates from the recent polls include:
- Kadam Santosh Appasaheb
- Kadam Sanjay Sahebrao
- Nikam Nilesh Vasantrao
- Deshpande Sanjay Ganeshrao
- Ingale Sunil Madhavrao
- Patil Anilkumar Bhaskar
- Gulwade Mangesh Madhukar
- Karad Ujjawala Kishanrao
- Pachnekar Anil Shankar
