May 9, 2024 | Pune: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has announced the temporary closure of three prominent temples within the Ashtavinayak circuit—the Shri Lenyadri Ganpati, Shri Vigneshwar Temple at Ozar, and Shri Ballaleshwar Temple at Pali. The closure is scheduled to take effect from May 10 and will remain in place until June 9, 2024. This decision has been taken to facilitate urgent chemical conservation, structural repairs, and deep cleaning of the ancient stone carvings and sanctums, which have faced natural wear and tear over centuries.

According to official sources, the ASI aims to preserve the aesthetic and structural integrity of these heritage sites. The Ashtavinayak temples, dedicated to Lord Ganesha, hold immense religious and historical significance in Maharashtra, attracting thousands of pilgrims daily. However, the heavy footfall and environmental factors have necessitated a dedicated maintenance window. During this 30-day period, the internal sanctums (Gabhara) will be off-limits to the public to allow experts to apply protective coatings to the idols and treat the surrounding masonry.

Local temple trusts have expressed their support for the conservation efforts, acknowledging that long-term preservation is vital for future generations. While the closure may cause temporary inconvenience to travelers and local businesses, the authorities have urged devotees to plan their visits accordingly.

Pilgrims are advised that while the main idols may be inaccessible for traditional ‘darshan’ or ‘abhishek,’ alternative arrangements for prayers in the outer courtyards may be provided depending on the progress of the work. The temples are expected to reopen in their restored glory just in time for the monsoon season, ensuring a safer and more visually enriched experience for visitors.
