In a major windfall for the city, the Central Government has approved a massive ₹1,290 crore funding package under the ‘Urban Challenge Fund’ to overhaul water supply in newly merged villages and mitigate urban flooding.
Pune | May 12, 2026: Addressing the rapid urbanization challenges of Pune, the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has sanctioned ₹1,290 crore for two critical municipal projects. Following a high-level meeting in Delhi, the Centre approved ₹890 crore for a comprehensive water supply scheme for 12 newly merged villages and an additional ₹400 crore for a robust city-wide flood control system. The decision comes after a detailed presentation by Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram, marking a significant victory for the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) administration’s persistent follow-up.

The water supply project aims to provide immediate relief to residents in fringe areas, including Dhayri, Narhe, Kirkatwadi, and Nanded, among others. The infrastructure will feature a 200 MLD water treatment plant, 71 kilometers of transmission lines, and a 390-kilometer distribution network. In a move toward modernization, the PMC will implement SCADA and AMR-based smart metering to ensure real-time monitoring, minimize leakages, and optimize water usage. This expansion complements the ongoing 24×7 water project in the old city limits, which is 85% complete and slated for full operation by August 2026.

Simultaneously, the ₹400 crore flood mitigation plan targets 335 chronic waterlogging spots identified across the city. With Pune facing increasingly frequent spells of intense rainfall, this fund will be utilized to construct advanced drainage systems and storm-water channels to ensure rapid water discharge. Beyond safeguarding property and public safety, these improvements are expected to significantly reduce traffic disruptions during the monsoon. These twin projects represent a landmark investment in Pune’s peripheral growth and urban resilience, setting the stage for more sustainable infrastructure development.
