Instagram users worldwide are raising privacy concerns over Meta’s newly launched “Instants” feature, claiming confusing default settings may lead to accidental photo sharing with a wider audience than intended.

Meta-owned Instagram is facing growing backlash after the global rollout of its new “Instants” feature, a disappearing photo-sharing tool designed to encourage more spontaneous and private communication between users. The feature, which resembles elements from Snapchat and BeReal, allows users to send temporary photos that vanish after being viewed or within 24 hours.
While Meta has promoted Instants as a more “authentic” and low-pressure way of sharing real-time moments, many users have expressed concerns over privacy and accidental sharing. Social media platforms and online forums have seen a surge of complaints from users who claim the feature’s interface is unclear and potentially misleading.
One of the biggest concerns revolves around the feature’s default sharing setting. Reports indicate that Instants automatically selects the “Friends” option instead of “Close Friends,” causing some users to unintentionally share disappearing photos with a larger group of followers than expected. Several users stated they were unaware that their first shared image had been distributed to all mutual followers.
The feature is integrated directly into Instagram’s Direct Messages section and appears as a small photo stack icon. Users can quickly capture and send unedited photos, react to received images and continue conversations through DMs. Meta says the platform also includes screenshot restrictions, parental supervision tools and safety protections for teen users.

Adding to the privacy debate, the controversy comes shortly after reports that Instagram had scaled back end-to-end encryption protections for direct messages, intensifying concerns among privacy advocates regarding user data and platform security.
As criticism intensified online, several technology websites and users began sharing methods to disable the feature. Users can turn off Instants by visiting Instagram settings, selecting “Content Preferences” and enabling the “Hide Instants in Inbox” option.
Despite the backlash, Meta continues to position Instants as part of a broader shift toward private, casual and real-time social interaction among younger users.
