Starbucks Korea has dismissed its chief executive following widespread public anger over a marketing campaign accused of invoking painful memories of South Korea’s 1980 Gwangju massacre. The controversy erupted after the company promoted a line of reusable drinkware under the phrase “Tank Day” on May 18 — the anniversary of the Gwangju Democratic Uprising, one of the darkest chapters in the country’s modern history.

The campaign centered around “Tank tumblers” and included promotional slogans that many South Koreans interpreted as references to the military crackdown that killed hundreds of pro-democracy protesters during the uprising. Critics also objected to another phrase used in the campaign that allegedly echoed a notorious statement linked to the 1987 torture death of student activist Park Jong-cheol.

Public outrage intensified rapidly across social media, with civic groups, historians and political leaders condemning the campaign as historically insensitive. South Korean President Lee Jae-myung publicly criticized the promotion and demanded accountability from the company.

Parent company Starbucks Korea responded by withdrawing the campaign and issuing multiple public apologies. Shinsegae Group Chairman Chung Yong-jin reportedly ordered immediate disciplinary action, resulting in the removal of CEO Sohn Jeong-hyun along with another executive associated with the campaign planning.

The incident has reignited debates in South Korea about corporate responsibility, historical sensitivity and the political symbolism associated with the Gwangju uprising, which remains a defining moment in the nation’s struggle for democracy. Online discussions also reflected divisions over whether the campaign was a careless mistake or a deliberate provocation.
