Meta Platforms has begun one of its biggest global restructuring exercises in recent years, announcing layoffs affecting nearly 8,000 employees worldwide as the company rapidly shifts focus towards artificial intelligence and leaner operations. Employees in Singapore were reportedly among the first to receive termination notices as the layoffs officially commenced early Wednesday morning.
According to reports, the job cuts represent nearly 10 percent of Meta’s global workforce. The restructuring is part of the company’s broader strategy to streamline operations, reduce management layers, and invest heavily in AI-focused products and infrastructure. Internal communications reportedly stated that the company aims to create “flatter structures” with smaller and faster-moving teams.
Alongside the layoffs, Meta is also reassigning nearly 7,000 employees into newly formed AI-focused teams. The company has additionally frozen or cancelled around 6,000 planned job openings as it redirects resources toward artificial intelligence initiatives and infrastructure expansion.
The layoffs are expected to impact engineering, product development, and managerial roles across several regions, including Asia, Europe, and North America. Reports indicated that employees were informed through phased notifications sent according to different time zones, with Singapore becoming the first major regional hub to receive official communication.

The development comes despite Meta posting strong revenue growth over the past year. However, the company is simultaneously increasing investments in AI infrastructure, with projected capital expenditure reportedly crossing $125 billion in 2026. Industry experts believe major technology companies are increasingly restructuring workforces to adapt to the fast-growing AI economy.
The latest layoffs have triggered fresh debate globally over the impact of artificial intelligence on employment, workplace restructuring, and the future of jobs in the technology sector.
