Heavy Commercial Vehicles to Transition to Pure Ethanol Within Two Years as India Launches 5,000 Fuel Stations

India will aggressively counter volatile crude markets by rolling out thousands of dedicated E-100 fuel stations, heavily prioritizing long-haul commercial trucks and passenger cars to anchor a sustainable logistics infrastructure.

NEW DELHI | May 21, 2026: Facing severe fiscal strain from escalating global energy markets, the Central Government has announced a monumental green energy transition plan to shift heavy commercial vehicles entirely to pure ethanol within the next two years. Under this highly ambitious initiative, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas will establish 5,000 dedicated E-100 (100% ethanol) dispensing stations across the country, creating a highly viable, domestic, and low-cost fueling alternative for the long-haul transportation and logistics sectors.

The aggressive policy push arrives at a critical economic juncture. Ongoing geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran have pushed international crude oil prices past the hundred-dollar-per-barrel mark. Because India relies heavily on foreign imports for nearly 90 percent of its petroleum needs, the national exchequer incurred a staggering expenditure of 10.9 lakh crore rupees on crude oil during the fiscal year 2026. Transitioning mass transportation to homegrown biofuel variants is expected to systematically alleviate the intense pressure on foreign exchange reserves and permanently insulate the Indian Rupee from global currency depreciation.

This strategic price disparity is deemed absolutely vital by industry experts to offset the slightly lower mileage efficiency of biofuel and to successfully stimulate large-scale retail demand across highly price-sensitive commercial markets. While top-tier automotive manufacturers have already successfully engineered fully operational 100 percent ethanol vehicle prototypes, mass commercial production lines remained halted solely due to the absolute absence of a nationwide refueling network.

According to senior ministry officials, the structural rollout will commence over the next one to two months with the immediate launch of 150 elite retail outlets across critical urban economic centers including Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur. The network infrastructure will quickly expand over the subsequent six to twelve months to encompass 500 specialized stations spanning the wider Delhi-NCR and Maharashtra regions, before systematically branching out into major industrial hubs like Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, and Hyderabad to support heavy freight corridors.
