Rampant unauthorized parking by local businesses and customers on Vishrantwadi footpaths forces pedestrians onto busy roads, triggering severe traffic congestion and raising safety concerns among frustrated local citizens and activists

Pune | May 26, 2026 : The growing menace of unauthorized parking on pedestrian walkways in Vishrantwadi has sparked massive outrage among local residents, who are now bitterly questioning whether the city’s footpaths are designed for walking or intended merely as free vehicle storage. The crucial stretch located between the Sawant Petrol Pump and Five Nine Chowk has transformed into a notorious hotspot for illegal parking, primarily driven by local hotel owners and their visiting patrons.

Because this vital arterial road connects directly to the busy Lohegaon Airport, it naturally experiences exceptionally heavy vehicular movement throughout the day. However, the blatant encroachment of designated sidewalks and road margins significantly narrows the available carriageway. This chronic narrowing leads to severe daily bottlenecks, prolonged traffic jams, and frequent vehicular accidents. With footpaths completely occupied by haphazardly parked two-wheelers and cars, helpless pedestriansincluding senior citizens and school children are forced to risk their lives by navigating through dense, fast-moving traffic right on the main street.

Local citizens have expressed deep resentment over the apparent, continuous apathy of both the city traffic police and the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) administration. The prolonged lack of strict enforcement has effectively emboldened commercial establishments to commandeer public pedestrian spaces as private parking lots, completely disregarding fundamental civic rules and public safety protocols.

Taking a definitive stance against this ongoing civic negligence, the Republican Party of India’s (RPI) Consumer Protection Front has officially intervened. State President Vishal Borde and City Liaison Chief Nikhil Kamble recently submitted a formal memorandum to the municipal authorities. Their detailed petition urgently highlights the intense daily hardships faced by helpless commuters, demanding immediate, aggressive, and stringent punitive action to clear the pavements and restore order.
