The Pune Municipal Corporation has launched a facial recognition and geo-fencing mobile application to monitor over 10,000 sanitation workers, ensuring salaries are paid strictly based on verified fieldwork and attendance

May 27, 2026 | Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has introduced an advanced digital monitoring system to track the daily attendance and on-ground performance of its permanent and contractual sanitation staff. Aimed at curbing rampant absenteeism and fake attendance, the civic body has made it strictly clear that workers will now be paid exclusively based on verified fieldwork.

Developed in collaboration with the HMS organization, the municipal health department has rolled out a specialized mobile application integrating facial recognition and geo-fencing technologies. Currently, over 10,000 sanitation workers are registered on this platform. Their daily attendance will be strictly recorded using facial scans. Previously, early morning shifts relied entirely on manual muster rolls, a massive administrative loophole frequently exploited by personnel to claim full wages without reporting to their assigned duties.

To comprehensively eliminate this issue, the PMC has geo-fenced all sweeping routes and designated cleaning zones across its 15 ward offices. This infrastructure allows the administration to digitally verify if employees are physically present and actively working within their allocated perimeters. Under the new directives issued by Additional Commissioner Prajit Nair, monthly wages will only be disbursed based on daily performance reports generated by the geo-fenced tracking system, not merely on initial login attendance.

To ensure foolproof execution, the accountability of higher officials has also been intensified. Assistant Commissioners of all ward offices are now mandated to conduct rigorous field inspections daily between 7:00 AM and 9:30 AM. These officers will face administrative action if glaring lapses in cleanliness are discovered within their jurisdictions. Furthermore, the grassroots hierarchy, comprising one supervisor for every 15 to 20 sweepers and drainage cleaners, will now be closely monitored through this comprehensive digital overhaul.
