Vinesh Phogat Allowed To Compete In Asian Games Trials After Court Relief Amid WFI Dispute

Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has been cleared to participate in the selection trials for the 2026 Asian Games after receiving legal relief from the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court, bringing temporary closure to a major dispute with the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI).

The controversy began after the WFI introduced eligibility criteria for the Asian Games trials that effectively excluded Phogat from contention. Under the federation’s rules, only medal winners from select national competitions were allowed to participate in the trials, a move that impacted Phogat as she had not competed in major domestic events during her break from the sport.

Phogat challenged the decision before the Delhi High Court, arguing that the selection policy unfairly disadvantaged athletes returning after maternity leave. The High Court agreed with her contention and observed that motherhood should not become a barrier to professional sporting opportunities. The court directed that she be allowed to participate in the trials and also ordered independent oversight of the selection process.

The Wrestling Federation of India subsequently approached the Supreme Court seeking to overturn the High Court’s decision. However, the apex court declined to stay the order, allowing Phogat to take part in the trials while further proceedings continue. During the hearing, the court acknowledged Phogat’s contribution to Indian wrestling and observed that she had brought pride to the country through her achievements.

In another significant development, the WFI later reversed its earlier position and permitted Phogat to compete in the women’s 53kg category, resolving uncertainty surrounding the weight class in which she would participate. The federation’s revised stance came ahead of the Asian Games selection trials scheduled in New Delhi.

The case has generated widespread debate within the sporting community, particularly regarding athlete welfare, maternity-related challenges and fairness in selection policies. Discussions across sports circles and online platforms have largely focused on balancing federation autonomy with equal opportunities for athletes returning to competition after personal and professional interruptions.

As the trials move forward, attention will now shift to Phogat’s performance on the mat and her bid to secure a place in India’s wrestling contingent for the 2026 Asian Games.
