Pune Municipal Corporation Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram has directed staff to achieve 100% census completion by June 10, warning of strict criminal and administrative action against any negligent officials

Pune |June 4, 2026: In a high-stakes administrative push to ensure the accuracy and efficiency of the national census, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram has issued a stern directive requiring all census-related activities in the city to be completed by June 10. While the official national deadline is June 14, the commissioner has urged the municipal workforce to prioritize this national task, emphasizing that any laxity will not be tolerated. The administration has adopted a zero-tolerance policy regarding delays, as evidenced by the recent suspension of an Assistant Commissioner and Charge Officer due to negligence in duty.

Addressing a review meeting held at the Anna Bhau Sathe Auditorium in Yerwada, Commissioner Ram engaged directly with census officials, charge officers, and field enumerators to assess the progress of the exercise. He clarified that enumerators and supervisors who fail to join the assigned tasks or display negligence will face immediate departmental inquiries, criminal proceedings under the Census Act of 1948, and formal adverse entries in their confidential service reports. To bolster accountability, officials have been instructed to conduct daily ward-level reviews and provide immediate solutions to technical or logistical hurdles.

Acknowledging the dedication of the workforce, the commissioner specially commended those enumerators who proactively completed their assigned enumeration blocks ahead of schedule. He further emphasized the importance of public engagement, urging Pune residents to participate actively by verifying the official identification cards of enumerators before sharing their information. He stressed that the integrity of the data collected depends on citizens providing accurate and error-free details. As the PMC aims for full coverage, the administration has reiterated its commitment to transparency and efficiency, ensuring that the census remains a robust tool for national development. By setting an ambitious internal deadline, the Pune administration aims to set a benchmark for accuracy and timely reporting in the ongoing national census drive.
