A political debate over Pune’s law-and-order situation intensified after Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar presented comparative crime statistics to counter allegations of rising crime made by NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule.

Pune: A political and administrative debate over Pune’s law-and-order situation has intensified after Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar strongly rebutted allegations made by NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule regarding rising crime in the city.

Presenting comparative crime statistics and official records, Kumar asserted that crime in Pune has witnessed a declining trend in several key categories and that describing the city as a “crime capital” is not supported by available data.

The controversy began after Sule raised concerns over a series of recent criminal incidents and questioned the effectiveness of law enforcement in the city. Responding in detail, the Police Commissioner released comparative figures indicating a decline in offences such as robbery, chain-snatching, theft, vehicle theft, attempted murder, and certain crimes against women during 2026 compared to the corresponding period in 2025.

Kumar maintained that while a few high-profile incidents had understandably generated public concern, isolated cases should not be confused with the overall crime situation. He emphasized that Pune Police had intensified patrolling, preventive action, combing operations, and crime-control measures following the recent incidents.

The Commissioner also rejected claims that Pune ranks among the country’s most crime-prone cities, citing official statistics and NCRB data. He highlighted action taken against organised crime networks, drug trafficking, habitual offenders, and other criminal elements during his tenure.

What stood out in the Commissioner’s response was its reliance on detailed statistics and documented evidence. By presenting category-wise crime data and year-on-year comparisons, Amitesh Kumar sought to shift the debate from perception to facts. His rebuttal was widely seen as a data-driven response to political criticism, with the police administration placing official figures in the public domain to support its position.

Observers noted that while Sule’s concerns reflected public anxiety arising from recent incidents, the Commissioner’s detailed statistical presentation raised substantive questions regarding the broader crime narrative. Significantly, no detailed public rebuttal to the specific figures and data cited by Pune Police had emerged at the time of filing this report, allowing Amitesh Kumar’s fact-based response to remain largely uncontested.
